You can not simply preach to the converted , the best adapted , as a society we simply can not afford to marginalize the Einsteins , Faradays Edisons and Marconi's of tomorrow . All of our texts , our training materials need to be rewritten and re-formatted . By carefully selecting the words and language , phases , metaphors and similes , we can create a text which persists . This simple but necessary step needs to precede the re-framing of training materials as case studies , simulations and games trainers . In the age of the internet , materials can be data based and placed inside a marketplace , alongside competing platforms offering choice allowing the market to make evidence based decisions .Crucially we can not go on socializing the gains and individualizing the losses [in the uk approximately 7% are educated privately yet they account for almost 50% of the top university [oxbridge] intake ] we need to reward effort and success . The second implication is that we need to explicitly train the capability to learn. We need to teach the skills which allow our trainees , our employees our students to internalize information so that they are better able to reflect , apply boil down and synthesize knowledge from many sources across extended time frames. The ability to break information down into bite size chunks , memorize by rote , repeat and then forgot two days later is of little or no practical value to employers or society. We need training , clear and unambiguous techniques for internalizing information , we need to learn how to build up the big picture , layer by layer , over days , weeks months and even years . Once such skills have been acquired , reinforce , by allowing employees and trainees to lead discussion groups , let students lead seminars and lecture . Encourage trainees to play a full role in case studies and simulations . You see how we store and process information has a direct impact on the ideas and insights we have . To phase this another way , chance favors a prepared mind , a prepared mind feeds upon itself and is better able to make new connections , better able to unify the seemingly unrelated . |
