Run the audio test first forward and backwards without repetition , to determine the unbiased base . Then the visual test forward and backwards . Focus only on the patterns and logical relationships between the numbers .

ANALYSIS :

According to George Miller the results for the auditory test should fall within a range of 5 and 9 for each test , 7 is the standardized average . A score of 6 or below is cause for concern suggesting that memory rather than lack of ability or application is a root cause of under achievement .


Test Strategy - results of the test are going to be skewed by test taking strategies . Learning the test taking strategy is important as average or above average results may reflect a false overall picture .

Rhyme/Rhythm - the subject repeats the numbers internally superimposing a rhythmic musical tonal quality to the sequence .

Chunking/Blocking - the subject chunks the numbers into groups of 2 3 or 4 . Increasing the number of sequenced objects that can be held in single context.

Patterns - The subject attempts to impose order by looking for patterns or skip patterns within the sequence . Examples : ordinal , repeated numbers , hierarchical ascent/decent , step alternating +/- , squares multiples and divisions , prime numbers .

Association - The subject looks to associate numbers with times , dates , objects , ages .

Visual Strategies - Subject looks for visual patterns in the shapes of numbers composed of straight lines , straight lines and curves and just straight lines to strengthen visualization of the sequence . Sub modalities such as use of color may be used to enhance the mental image . Note - right handed right eye , subject should look up and to the right while listening and up and to the left when recalling each sequence .

VERBAL MNEMONICS - Chain link phonetic key words together [auditory] , through improvisation combining objects into a narrative on the fly .

In an auditory thinking style, monitoring and evaluation of written text is carried out constantly , through key word or concept identification . Typically the reader will continually poll working memory , asking after each sentence or paragraph what is the message here , can the message be reduced to an essence and what one word or phrase sums this message up [key word]. Gradually a cognitive model of sequentially ordered key words is constructed . The success of this strategy is dependent on the

Length of span
Span duration
Directionality of span

For this learning strategy to be effective a model has to exist for long enough for the subject to reflect on the elements that make up the whole , without regard to directionality .

When Auditory thinking style conflict with preferred visual thinking style . the subject reviews the model at such a high level that all the detail is missing . This theory predicates that after a short period of time the auditory model will be cleared from short term memory , the only trace remains in visual memory . A page of unstructured text without headings , sub headings or bullet points will provide no access to the hidden stored file .

In this example the subject may after gentle cajoling abandon attempts to recall the auditory model and attempt to call up visual long term memory , the key to unlocking this memory may be structural , in this case the three bold bullet points may afford access . In this case the 3 bullet points are not central to the gestalt meaning although for the literal minded structurally they are central.
